Just Work

THE DAY

Not much happened today.  Just worked on the short story.  Wrote a fair amount, but it’s like everything else: I walk away, I see what’s missing, I know that a good two-thirds of what I wrote today will go away tomorrow.  (The narrative wasn’t quite edgy enough, plus I kind of forgot what the world in which I’m writing was about.  I know that sounds dumb, but it’s hard to keep a world you haven’t made up and in which you’ve only been asked to play, straight.)

Whatever.  It’ll be fine.  This is how I always work, and since there’s a deadline involved here…this thing has to get done.  I’ve started earlier than I normally would because I’ll be entertaining company all this weekend, what with Passover and all.  So, not too long to muck around.  If I work it right, I could be close to done by Friday.  Deadline is May 1.  I’ll get there.

The knee is still a pain in the ass.

WRITING OUT LOUD

What I’m Watching:
Finished The Blacklist and now…I don’t know.  Before seeing the end, I’d have said no way Megan Boone wasn’t coming back.  Except I don’t see how you massage this one unless the only people who knew were a) the doc and b) Mr. Kaplan.  I also don’t see where the show can go if she’s not around, even though I didn’t much care for her character.  (I also read an article pointing out that an enormous number of female leads bit the dust this past week.)

Started the first season of Motive.  Not bad.  Not GREAT.  But not bad.  I like the male lead detective: my kind of scruffy older guy who’s still probably younger than me, which is downright annoying.

What I’m Reading:
A Dream of Polar Fog.  I wish I found this more compelling.  Right now, I’m reading it the way you take vitamins: because they’re good for you.

What I’m Listening to:
“Strangers in Fog” by Bill Pronzini.  An okay listen, but I knew what was going to happen, so a great mystery story, this wasn’t.  So far, the only mystery story I’ve really enjoyed is Block’s “If You Can’t Stand the Heat.”
