THE DAY
What was I thinking?
In a fit of misguided support for the husband, I volunteered us both for the 5K Double Helix run tonight. Now, let’s be clear about one thing: neither of us has run for more than 20 years. I used to run almost every day (when I wasn’t swimming) back in the day; I ran in the middle of mind-numbing winters and blisteringly hot summers, on sidewalks and trails. I ran a lot. My problem is that my knees and hips told me that their heart just wasn’t in it, and so eventually I stopped, opting for machines and swims and fast walks.
I did okay for two miles; I really did. I wasn’t super-fast, but I wasn’t that slow either. Then, at about 2.25 miles, my right knee began to scream. I mean, really scream, and kind of all of a sudden. So I slowed down and then eventually I decided just to walk. Except I got pissed, especially when people I knew who were in worse shape buzzed past. So I sped up, jog-hobbling for about a half mile, walking for a quarter mile.
Doing three miles that way took me 36 minutes. Which isn’t terrible. If I’d been able to keep up the pace of those first two miles, I might even have squeaked in at 32 minutes.
And then you have to wonder: why am I stressing about this? I don’t run!
But I am competitive–and I hate not being able to do what I used to with relative ease.
At this point, however, my right knee is not amused.
Oh, and did I mention that I swam beforehand?
Yeah. Competitive.

What I’m Watching:
Nothing, today. Swam and then ground down the cartilage in my right knee.

What I’m Reading:
I don’t think I read anything last night. Oh, I know…I watched the NCAA. What a fabulous game.

What I’m Listening to:
Hilary Clinton get her head handed to her on a platter. I mean, no one’s called the WI primary yet but sounds like it’s going to Sanders. I don’t think I’ve ever been so eager for Cruz to win.
I have a friend who’s out of the country right now and posted that she never realized how much this election is stressing her out until she wasn’t inundated with news about it 24/7. I feel that.
