THE DAY

Well, the day was about as good to me as I was to it . . . meaning that no day is good unless you find something good in it.  Today, I did what I used to: wrote a schedule down to the nanosecond and stuck to it, pretty much.  Even though I figured I was on a roll–having worked straight from 8 until 12:30–I decided to get up, go swim, stick to the plan. It worked out, more or less.

It was also one of those days when you’re killing more than adding.  <shrug> Has to happen sometime.  But there was a great line that I just knew should be the first line, only I wasn’t sure how to get it where it needed to go. (This is the type of thing that will leave you sleepless for days, weeks.)  So I futzed with stuff until it WAS the first line–and then it was like <DOH!>.  Of course, this is how to bridge chapters, tie characters together . . . foreshadow the end.

Idiot.  It only took me, what, three months to figure it out?  OTOH, if you believe Stephen King, he can sometimes fret for years over a first line or paragraph.  On the other hand, he has scads of other books and trunk novels to fill the void.  Whatever…

What I’m Watching:
Not a blessed thing.

What I’m Reading:
Beside the Troubled Waters.  It’s . . . okay.  Good for getting a general gist and little bon mots.

What I’m Listening to:
To my surprise, I listened to some music today.  Not a lot, and only first thing this morning: a lovely harpsichord concerto by CPE Bach.  True story: The reason I went to Oberlin was because I walked into the conservatory, spotted a harpsichord, hit a key . . . and it made a sound.  I only took a semester of harpsichord; I was always too busy to practice and so gave it up.  But I have always wanted to learn and enjoyed harpsichord music.  Just something about the sound.

Anyway, I listened to some music.  I was shocked.  Then I stopped listening because I can’t both listen and work.
