Work Comes First

THE DAY

So I’m working away this morning, trying to finish up this one section before I have to take off and go to the pool and then get my hair done, when I realize that I’m not going to finish when I thought I might.  It wasn’t that I had a TON of writing left to do–only another few pages, I figured–and so I might have simply stopped, gone swimming, done the hair, done a little shopping, come back, and finish up.

But I thought . . . no, don’t.  Don’t stop.  The work comes first.  So, okay, I’ll miss the pool, but the gym will be open when I’m done at the hair place.  I can go there instead.  Just suck it up and get the work done.

And that’s what I did.  I was right, too.  I wrapped up the section after another forty-five minutes or so.  In fact, I had time left over before I was supposed to leave for the hair, so I treated myself to grabbing a couple tops from an online sale.  (I’d eyed them all week but wouldn’t allow myself to buy them until I finished this part of the book.)  So, a little reward.

Then I went to get the hair done, did the gym, saw the husband who’s actually still out at a dinner (which is a relief because that means I don’t have to cook), did some shopping then came back, put in a load of laundry and then added a short bit to the end of the section/chapter that I thought needed to go there.

So, it was an okay writing day, with a little reward thrown in.  In a few minutes, I’ll hammer out the chapter beats for tomorrow and then call it a night.

What I’m Watching:
Stupidly, I forgot to bring the iPod to the gym, probably because I changed up my plans instead of going to the pool.  So, anyway, I watched NCIS with closed captions since I didn’t have earphones either.  You know…good clean fun.  I loved that show when Ziva was in it.  When she left, it was like . . . I’m done.  Now that Michael Weatherly’s leaving, too, writing’s on the wall.  Obviously, he knows an essential element’s gone.  If the ratings weren’t going down–and I’ll bet they are–he’d stay.

What I’m Reading:
Operation Paperclip: seriously, every single person who waxes nostalgic about the “German” rocket scientists ought to be required to read this book about the Nazis we brought over.  They knew what was going on; Van Braun personally oversaw requests for more Buchenwald prisoners to build his precious V-2 rockets.

What I’m Listening to:
The quiet.  At night–and especially in winter–there’s not a sound up here except the sough of the wind.

Although here was a freaky moment: today there were big BOOMS from exploding ordnance and tests at the Arsenal.  Now that I think back on it, I frequently hear those during the day.  I just noticed them more today for some reason.
