The World Beyond My Window

THE DAY

Everyone is all aflutter here, worrying about the “dangerous cold” we’re having (like…it’s fourteen at night) and the possibility of snow and/or some sleet tomorrow.  Not much; no one is forecasting anything like an accumulation that matters, although it’s true that they close the roads down the mountain because they can just be so treacherous.  Anyway, so when I wasn’t making fun of this–believe it or not, there was a run on bread and milk in all the local groceries–I have been paying attention.

But this whole thing about bread and milk…it’s pretty funny.

Having wandered around outside–and, yes, I actually wore a heavier jacket today after running around in shirtsleeves on Sunday–I can say that the air smells a touch like snow.  When you lived around snow as long as I have, there is just this certain scent, and the air definitely has it today.  I’m still not worried, but I’m also thinking ahead to what I had planned tomorrow (not writing first off but going to the Social Security office for a new card; I don’t have my original and you need one for an AL driver’s license, which is just silly because it will completely blow my morning) and wondering if I won’t be staying home after all.  I think it will depend.

But it was kind of fun to look beyond my own nose and at the world beyond my window for a change.  I also find myself longing for a vacation–which usually means that I’m trying to avoid something but on the other hand, this is the first time I’ve been stuck in Alabama.  So I really might want to get the hell out of here.  No, make that a definite.

I still did my work, though.  Didn’t get quite as much done as I would’ve wished; there were workmen here today and more expected tomorrow.  But not bad.

What I’m Watching:
Tried the first episode of Ray Donovan.  Not bad; the Internet at the Y is glitchy, so despite 90 minutes of aerobics and a half hour on strength, I still didn’t get through the thing.  But I like Liev Schreiber quite a bit, so I’m willing to give this some time (and I like it enough, better than The Affair for sure).

What I’m Reading:
Pet Sematary. Still.

What I’m Listening to:
Silence.  Still.  I’m beginning to think I won’t be listening to anything for a bit.  Don’t want anyone else’s words getting mixed up in mine.
