Uhm…I Had a Good Idea?

That I’m really not going to talk about?  I’m superstitious that way, but it’s hard enough to make a finished book sound semi-intelligent in three sentences or less.  An idea about a work-in-progress is certain to sound like gibbering.  But suffice to say…I had a cool idea.

THE DAY

Frankly, I didn’t know what to expect today.  Entertained a couple last night until very late; the wife works with the husband and her husband is a (pretty entertaining) rocket scientist.  This is probably the only place other than, say . . . Canaveral or Johnson Space Center where there are more rocket scientists and engineers than you can shake a stick at.  Most are fairly humorless.  It just seems to be in the nature of engineers and rocket scientists.  But I’m sure they find someone as artsy-fartsy as I to be maddening, too.

Anyway, right before bed last night, I scrawled out the things that needed to happen today in terms of the book.  The temptation to avoid the damn page was pretty high, too; it was a relatively nice day and sunny.  After several days of fog and clouds and general dreariness, I was ready to get outside.  (Really, the weather here is weird.  Winter is really a protracted October with a couple freeze days.  I’m not kidding.  Wandered around in a long-sleeved shirt all day; wore a sweater outside.  Everyone else is wearing their parkas…but it was 50 degrees.)

But I didn’t avoid the page.  I made coffee, sat down, and started to work–and in the course of that, I had this really interesting (dare I say, good?) idea.

Actually, it didn’t occur to me until I was swimming.  It’s like everything else; I work hard, grind away, then walk away and that’s when the idea hits.  The idea came somewhere around the tenth lap, I think; that’s when I’m usually finally warmed up and letting my mind wander and not focus so much on breathing.

Now…will this work?  I don’t know, but it does add one layer of complexity and grabs my interest without complicating the narrative.  That is, there’s no need to go back and rewrite or work something else in. So that’s a good thing.

Anyway, so worked all morning.  Broke off to go swim.  Came back to start a pizza dough and then worked until the husband came home from the gym.  Watched football but only in dribs and drabs.  I’m not THAT hepped on any of the teams, although I think it will be Carolina against NE, and the Patriots will reduce the Panthers to grease spots because that’s what the Patriots do.

What I’m Watching:

Not a blessed thing.  The playoffs, but only in tiny increments.  I just didn’t care.

What I’m Reading:

Pet Sematary, but dang, if I haven’t found a couple other books to put on the TBR pile.

What I’m Listening to:

Still the silence, punctuated by tinnitus, which is truly driving me mad.  Constant now. :<P
