Sleeping on it

THE DAY

I’d fully intended to return to the book today, especially after working on covers yesterday and giving my brain a rest (and a chance to think about whether I really wanted to include another twist to my character’s life).  But, you know, I didn’t sleep well again, though this time it was because I was unhappy with one of those covers (the one for DRIVING BLIND).  I knew it wasn’t quite right, though I figured it was probably good enough for the assignment.  (Although I hate being only “good enough.”  Like, if I’m going to spend time on something, that means I’ve spent time I’ll never get back.  So I try to treat every assignment as make-or-break and as seriously as possible.  For these covers, that wasn’t so tough because they are for stories I’ve really written that I would eventually like to put up.)

So, anyway, I was fretting about the stupid cover–and thinking about the book–but mainly fretting.

Which meant that, this morning, I made coffee, did a cursory check of my email, and then started right in with a new cover.  Worked on it for several hours because getting all those letters to look right on a diagonal was very tricky (and I had to change fonts a couple of times to find a good match). In the end, I think this is a better cover.  Don’t know if it’s “right,” but it’s definitely one I feel more comfortable turning in for an assignment.

Driving Blind Redo #4

Then, turned my attention to trying to get some writing done.  Not as easy I thought it would be, and after thinking that I wouldn’t  include this complication…I decided to include it.  Which meant setting the scene, etc.  By the time I’d sort of decided on an approach, it was time to go swim because we’re going out with folks in a few hours and the pool closes at 3 on Saturdays.  Did a little shopping after that, too.

So…not the greatest writing day.  But I’m trying not to sweat it.  Before we leave, I’ll likely work out the chapter beats so I know what the hell I’m doing.  As always, things always occur to me when I’m NOT at the bloody computer.

What I’m Watching:

At the moment . . . the Kansas City Chiefs are trouncing the Texans.  This should be no surprise to anyone.

I’ll miss a good three quarters of the Steelers this evening, which sucks.  But at least there’s the radio and then the last quarter.

OTOH, the lights keep flickering and there’s a rainstorm that’s moved in.  If we lose power, I will be pissed.

What I’m Reading:

Pet Sematary…maybe.  I need to have some concentrated time to get into this.

What I’m Listening to:

14 by Peter Cline; it’s not bad, though I’ve only listened to about 40 minutes.  Cline wrote The Fold which I liked, though, so I’m willing to give this some time, and the narrator’s decent.
