Hunting What You Love

THE DAY

Where did the day go?  Beats me.  Got up early and got sort of a good start, though the husband stuck around for several hours this morning.  Much as I love him–and I really do–I need my work space, and he needs his.  So it was kind of a relief when he headed off to work.  I still futzed around, so I don’t think the futzing was really about him; it was about me not knowing precisely where the story needed to go.  These are the times when you just grind it out, get words down (any words will do; you can always kill them later); and trust that, eventually, a direction will become clear.

And if it doesn’t?  Then it’s a little bit like hunting down those you love: if what you love wants to go free, let it go.  If it doesn’t come back, hunt it down and kill it.

So, really, quite a boring day, in a way: work; the gym; back home to work some more and now making dinner for the husband, winding down.  Not a spectacular day, writing-wise, but not one of my worst either.  You take what you can get.

Honestly, the exciting world of a writer?  So very not.  Guys, we spend most of our time in a room making stuff up.

I figure one more day on this section, and then we move on.

What I’m Watching:

Making of a Murderer: I will admit to being skeptical about this.  I lived in Wisconsin when the whole Steve Avery thing broke: that is, the overturning of his conviction and then his subsequent arrest for murder.  It’s clear that the documentary folks skew toward an indictment of the prosecutors and sheriff’s office, while glossing over a few other things (okay, this may be a nice guy–maybe–but yes, he is impulsive and shows really bad judgment and yeah, he threatened a woman with a gun (loaded or not; makes no difference), and don’t try to tell me that a guy who spends 18 years in jail wrongly accused isn’t carting around a ton of anger, no matter what).  Still, this make for interesting watching much more so than, say, the second season of Serial (which is listening, but you get my drift).

What I’m Reading (and Listening to):

Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist; I’m undecided here.  Soem sections are really interesting; others not so much.  Again, thsi doesn’t have the same emotional tug as Let Me In, a comparison that–I’m aware–is unfair because every book is different.  (I mean, how many times have I heard people wish that I would write something as good as ASHES?).  Still, it’s not quite sucked me in yet.  But it’s at least good enough that I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt.
